7 Must-See Routes for Trail Running Around the World

Check out our list of must-visit running trails around the world.

1. Australia: The Great Ocean Walk

Looking for a moderate destination trail by the ocean? Add The Great Ocean Walk to your list! It has lots of undulation, but no major grades, making it doable for anyone at any fitness level. You’ll even catch views of the iconic Twelve Apostles, and Milanesia Beach for cliff top views!

2. London: The Abandoned Railway Through Parkland Walk

Looking for a real urban/nature hybrid adventure? The Parkland Walk can best be described as London’s version of the New York City High Line, following the old abandoned railroad track. It’s even filled with short tunnels and lots of trees, which keep the views interesting. There are many short loops and entrances, making it easy to make it a quick or long run, depending on your workout goals!

3. San Francisco: Marin Headlands Coastal Trail

Some of the most breathtaking views in California are from nearly anywhere on the Marin Headlands Coastal Trails. Not only will you catch a killer sunset, but you’ll also have views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Redwood National Park. Since the California Coast is somewhat rocky, you’ll be able to challenge yourself with tons of hills! It also has options for singletrack trails and dirt roads, making it doable for groups of any size.

4. Denver: The Colorado Trail

Starting just outside of Denver, you can access the Colorado Trail, which runs to Durango, through eight ranges of the Rocky Mountains. There are multiple routes you can take and enter from, making it easy to crop off a smaller portion for a quick trail run.

5. Vermont: The Long Trail

Better known as the oldest long-distance trail in the United States, The Long Trail boasts gorgeous views, but for a tough trade. Much of the trail has steep uphill and downhill portions. If you’re a challenge seeker, this scenic trail will help you reach new heights!

6. Sacramento: The Western States Trail

Arguably the most notable running trail in California, the Western States Trail boasts beautiful views that span from the high Sierra Nevada Mountains and down into Sacramento. It’s also home to one of the most famous ultramarathons in the world: The Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, which begins at Squaw Valley and ends at the bottom of the foothills near Sacramento. Starting at either side, you’ll catch views you’ll never forget.

7. New York: Appalachian National Scenic Trail

One of the most well known outdoor destinations. Once you’ve arrived at the trail stop, you can choose to run south towards New Jersey or north towards Connecticut. You’ll get to enjoy views of rolling hills and forest alike, making for a scenic run. If you’re training for a marathon, you can even make it out 10 miles to Ten Mile River. The trail continues all the way up to Maine!

Speaking of trail running, make sure you think about adequate nutrition. The food you fuel your body, will make a difference between running out of energy on mile 6 or a steady finish. We talk sports nutrition and macros in another post here.

Happy trails!
